Bootstrapped and profitable: easybill acquired by LEA Partners after more than 15 years in business

Founded in 2007 by Philipp Gesell, Ronny Keyser and Christian Szardenings, well-known easybill has just been acquired by private equity firm LEA Partners. LEA Partners' portfolio also includes investments in Aleph Alpha (AI), DYNO (occupational pensions) and others.
In addition to its core offering as an invoicing tool, easybill offers integrations with most major accounting and tax software solutions for businesses such as DATEV, lexoffice and Taxdoo, but also offers integrations with finAPI and GetMyInvoices. It gets bonus points from us for providing a network of tax advisors for its users. In addition to tax advisors, easybill targets SMBs, including those with a need for e-commerce solutions.
Profitable for several years, easybill reports more than 18.000 users, while the last reported profit is around 500.000 euro in 2022. With the exception of an external investment in 2011, the investor of which left again in 2016, easybill has survived without external investors.
The future for easybill seems to be international, with the "focus […] on providing a particularly user-friendly, EU-compliant solution for mandatory electronic invoicing by companies", according to the new CEO Andreas Seifert.
