CuratedAI: New GenAI tool for lawyers. And tax advisors?

Update (29.09.2023)

We just learned from CuratedAI that their current beta is focused on European data protection and digital law. An implementation of the complete EU tax legislation is on the roadmap. We will follow all further developments in that direction. If you do not want to miss anything, subscribe to our newsletter. Happy reading 💜

The new GenAI kid on the block, CuratedAI, praises itself as the "AI assistant for European lawyers" and offers its specifically trained LLM (= Large Language Model) in a beta version on their website.

What makes it special is that it is "trained on official European legal databases" - and only those. No hallucinations (= outputs that have no basis in the real world or outputs that are unexpected) to expect. Of course, there is a twist. As their slogan suggests it is aimed at lawyers, not necessarily tax advisors or tax experts. And since we focus on TaxTech here, that … would be nice.

Luckily, there is this one big tax that is the poster child of harmonised tax law within the European Union (EU): VAT (=Value Added Tax) law. Thus, CuratedAI could still be interesting for our little community. Even though in Germany we can consider ourselves lucky with having already access to a similar tool fed directly with German tax laws and other tax resources: Taxy.io Answers BETA. A tool that is based on GPT-4 and Taxy.io's own trained "TaxGPT".

However, more is more and CuratedAI is a much welcomed addition.

So, how does it work?

On curatedai.eu you can "Try the Beta (for Free)" by creating an account with them. After you have done that and are logged in you will see this prompt interface:

Here, you will be able to start your research. You get some tips and examples on the way as well. As soon as you enter your prompt you will be introduced to the chat and answer interface:

On the right side are the answers to your original prompt at the top. The answers consist of articles that CuratedAI's AI (=Artificial Intelligence) thinks are relevant. You can directly look at excerpts by clicking on the blue links in the "Relevant" sections, open the provided documents directly by clicking on the blue button "OPEN DOCUMENT" and exclude or include the documents for further questioning. The first documents are always automatically included.

To start asking questions you have to look on the left side where you are seeing a chat interface. This can be used to ask questions about the selected documents on the right. It works like you would know it from ChatGPT:

First impressions

It is a brand new tool and we did not have any expectations. Mainly, we were curious if this tool is something worthwhile also for tax advisors to simplify their researches as well - as long as it concerns EU tax law. And yes, it is …

The good thing: You always know where your answers are derived from. Researching about Electronic Invoicingresulted in a promising answer as you can see on the last screenshot. However, simple searches asking for documents regarding the VAT Directive did not yield the expected results. Maybe they were too simple :-)

For more impressions you should check out a demo video that was posted on LinkedIn. In that demo, even a mail is formulated on the basis of the selected documents' contents.

Sunset

CuratedAI could be a good research tool for your needs. The basis is there. Now time will tell what the ambitious team from CuratedAI can improve on.

We recommend to try it yourself - especially if you are more involved with European (tax) law. It might fair even better with an expert who actually tries to solve a real case. If you do: tell us about your experience!
